Breaking the Cycle of Overwhelm

Many mums find themselves feeling like they’re constantly in "survival mode," juggling responsibilities, managing a household, and handling emotional ups and downs. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel so stressed or reactive, the answer may lie in your nervous system.

Your nervous system is responsible for how your body responds to stress. Think of it as a traffic light: when it’s green, you’re calm, present, and able to handle life’s challenges. When it turns red, you’re in "fight or flight" mode—stressed, anxious, and on edge. Unfortunately, many mums find themselves stuck at that red light far too often with the increased demands of modern motherhood.

Modern motherhood places endless demands on us, and without proper nervous system regulation, we can feel like we’re constantly on high alert. When your nervous system gets stuck in "red," it makes it harder to manage stress, stay patient with your kids, and enjoy daily life.

The good news is that you can shift your nervous system back to green with a few simple practices:

  1. Breathwork: Your breath is directly linked to your nervous system. Try a simple breathing technique like box breathing—inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4—to calm your body and mind.

  2. Mindful Moments: Taking just five minutes a day to connect with yourself can make a world of difference. Sit in a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Even this small act can help shift you out of fight-or-flight mode.

  3. Nourishing Yourself: The foods you eat play a huge role in nervous system health. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon and walnuts) and magnesium (found in leafy greens) help reduce stress and anxiety.

Modern Motherhood is incredibly demanding and often leaves us feeling burnt out, overwhelmed and reactive with our children. By taking small steps to regulate your nervous system, you can start to reconnect with yourself, with your nervous system and move from feeling as though you are merely surviving to truly thriving.
